Anti Virus Free

I am really fed up with my Heavy Anti-virus.

Is there a way I can use my computer that's connected to the internet and is at the same time run without a Anti Virus.

I remember reading about that in some magazine long time ago, but I ain't sure if it can be really done.

If anyone know the HOW-TOs, please let me know.

I am running XP on my machine and will not like to upgrade to vista for the while

Not a smart idea to run w/out an anti-virus. Get AVG free edition. It's nice and light and works well.
